Democracy and Rule of Law: "Unnatural Acts" Among Consenting Adults
05/24/2026
Jeff Seward

Democracy and the rule of law as we know them, although highly desirable, are highly artificial arrangements of habits and complex institutions designed to avoid social arrangements that are often tyrannical or corrupt. They are not automatically maintained and can come undone if systematically neglected or assaulted, and it may be a long and complicated task to reestablish them, with no guarantees. The Trump era may be doing damage that will be extremely difficult to fix. Jeff Seward has been a University Professor at Pacific University and UT San Antonio, as well as prize-winning documentary producer and reporter.

To Pursue or Not to Pursue: The Complexity of Biological Science
04/12/2026
Dr. Gordon Orians

All organisms must find enough food for reproduction, and all animals with varied diets must decide whether to pursue and capture a potential prey or wait for another that might arrive. This seemingly simple dilemma has spawned a rich theoretical and empirical literature on Foraging Theory. Investigator Gordon Orians, frequent HGP presenter and Professor Emeritus from University of Washington, will guide your tour of the surprising theoretical and experimental results of attempts to answer that seemingly simple question and to show how difficult it was. Dr. Orians has also served on Nat. and American Academies of Sciences.
